Quarterly Forums

The last day of each of the first three grading periods the Academy will open itself to the public for discussion, debate, movies, and presentations on a chosen topic.  All classes will be required to make a presentation, moderate a discussion panel, or otherwise introduce information on the chosen topic to the population in attendance.  Each member of the Academy will have a part in the forum.

Representative topics:  endangered species, deterioration of the ozone layer, recycling, homeless living. wetlands, mandatory laws (seat belts, car seats), government set age limits (drinking, driving, voting), zoning restrictions, ratings (movie, record, book), media censorship, abortion, home schooling, etc.

Prior to each forum, materials will be presented to students discussing all sides of the issues in such formats as homeroom contracts and presentations, thematic approaches across the curriculum, community involvement days, and field trips.

At each forum the able students will debate concepts regarding the topic. Some students will make individual presentations. Movies and/or filmstrips related to the topic will be shown. Age appropriate round table discussions and town halls will be held involving both parents and children with community figures. Organizations whose purposes are directly related to the topics will be invited to speak. Inventions, solutions, and other creative approaches to solving or living with or managing the topic will be presented. Student created slide shows, songs, dances, and other forms of expression will round out the day.
