Social Action Week
(last week of April)

At the beginning of the year each classroom will decide what their “personal charity” will be for this year.  They will decide who they want to help, how they are going to help, what resources they need to help.  Then they will prepare whatever they need to prepare to be productive the entire week assisting this organization.  These projects will be as individual as the interests of the students in the classroom.  For example, a student’s local church might want to remake a room into a preschool.  The students would clear out the room, clean it, paint it, decorate it, get furniture and toys for it and put it together.  A soup kitchen might need to expand the number of tables utilized at their facility.  The class may spend the week constructing, sanding, painting/sealing, and putting into place the required tables and benches.  The local public TV station might be having their annual fundraiser.  The students may answer the phones, run commercials, take pledges, and do behind the scenes work, including a mailing for the station.

Faculty will not participate in Social Action week instead the students will be joined by teaching assistants and community volunteers.  Faculty will use these days as planning days to better coordinate the individual instruction of the student population and to participate in Professional Development classes.
